What the Direct Communications Unit Handles

The Home Office says it can only respond to messages directly about the Home Office. For anything else, write to the department or body that deals with it.

Visas and immigration, Immigration Enforcement, Border Force, the Disclosure and Barring Service and HM Passport Office each have their own complaints procedure. All other Home Office complaints go to the Direct Communications Unit.

What to Put in a Complaint

Say which area of the Home Office your complaint is about, and give a contact name if you have one. Say whether it is a new complaint or a follow-up, describe the problem clearly and say what you would like the Home Office to do. Include your full postal address, phone number and email address if you have one.

Passport Complaints

Start with HM Passport Office, by phone, its online enquiry form or post. Give full details of the problem, the passport holder's name and date of birth, when the application was sent and which office received it, and the barcode and passport numbers if you have them.

If you are still unhappy, ask for a review. After that you can go to the Independent Examiner of Complaints within 3 months, and then ask your MP to refer your complaint to the Public Service Ombudsman.

GOV.UK gives an online service for reporting a lost or stolen passport, and no postal address for it.

If You Are Still Unhappy

For complaints handled by the Direct Communications Unit, you can ask for your complaint to go to a more senior member of staff. After that, ask your MP to refer it to the Public Service Ombudsman.
