How Complaining to an Ombudsman Works

  1. 1Complain to the business firstWrite to the business or public body, say what went wrong and what you want it to do, and keep a copy. A tracked letter shows the date it arrived.
  2. 2Wait for its final responseMany schemes give the business 8 weeks to reply, or 6 weeks for phone and broadband complaints. A deadlock letter, saying it will not do any more, can let you go sooner.
  3. 3Take it to the ombudsmanMost schemes give you 12 months from the final response. Check the scheme's own time limit, as some are shorter.
