What Recorded Delivery Means Now
Recorded delivery was Royal Mail's name for a letter that is signed for on delivery. The service is now called Royal Mail Signed For, and many people still call it recorded delivery. The law still uses the old name: the Recorded Delivery Service Act 1962 lets the recorded delivery service be used wherever an Act allows registered post.
With Signed For, the person who receives your letter signs for it. Royal Mail shows the signature on its Track your item page, usually within 72 hours of delivery. It confirms delivery, but it does not track the letter along the way.
If Nobody Is In
If nobody is in to sign, Royal Mail leaves a Something for you card and keeps the letter at the local delivery office for 18 days, so it can be collected or redelivered. After that it is returned.
Recorded Delivery, Tracked or Special Delivery?
Signed For costs £7.99 and gives you a signature, usually within 2 to 3 working days. Tracked 24 costs £8.99, aims for the next working day and shows each step of the journey, but nobody signs for it. Special Delivery costs £18.99 and gives you both, with delivery guaranteed by 1pm the next working day.
If a law, contract or court rule says how your letter must be sent, check what it requires before you choose.
