Complain to Your Supplier First

The Energy Ombudsman only looks at a dispute once your supplier has had the chance to sort it out. Your supplier has 8 weeks. If it sends you a deadlock letter, saying it will not do any more, you can go to the Energy Ombudsman straight away.

Put your complaint in writing and keep a copy. A tracked letter shows the date it arrived, which helps you count the 8 weeks.

Time Limit

You must take your dispute to the Energy Ombudsman within 12 months of your supplier's deadlock letter.

In June 2026 the Energy Ombudsman announced plans to cut the 8 week wait to 6 weeks. It has not given a start date, and its FAQs still say 8 weeks.

What It Covers

The Energy Ombudsman handles disputes with energy suppliers, heat networks, network operators, flexibility service providers and Green Deal providers, as long as the business is a member of its scheme and trades in Britain. It cannot fine or punish companies, or tell them how to run their business.

What Happens Next

The Energy Ombudsman expects to reach a decision within 6 weeks. If you accept it, your supplier must carry it out within 28 days. If you reject it, you can still take your complaint elsewhere, such as to court.
