What a CCJ Is

A County Court Judgment, or CCJ, means the court has formally decided that you owe money. It goes on the Register of Judgments, Orders and Fines for 6 years, and it can make it hard to get credit.

If You Pay Within One Month

If you pay the full amount within one month of the judgment date, you can get the judgment removed from the register. Pay the person or business you owe, not the court, then write to the court to say you have paid, with proof from them.

If You Pay After One Month

The judgment stays on the register for 6 years, but it is marked as satisfied, so anyone searching can see you paid. For proof, apply to the court dealing with your case for a certificate of satisfaction on form N443. The fee is £19, by cheque payable to HMCTS.

If You Do Not Owe the Money

You can ask the court to set the judgment aside if you do not owe the money, or you did not get or reply to the original claim. Fill in form N244 and send it to the court. The fee is £321, and you may have to go to a private hearing to explain why. Apply as soon as you can.

If You Cannot Afford the Payments

Ask the court to change the payments on form N245. Give details of your income and spending, and say how much you can realistically afford. The fee is £16. Free debt charities such as StepChange, Citizens Advice and National Debtline can help.

If You Do Not Pay

The person or business you owe can ask the court to enforce the judgment, for example with a warrant of control, which lets bailiffs take goods, or an attachment of earnings order, which takes money from your wages.
