easyJet is one of the biggest cheap airlines in Europe. They started in 1995 in a small office at London Luton Airport. Their founder is a Greek-Cypriot businessman called Sir Stelios Haji-Ioannou. easyJet uses only Airbus A320 family planes (the A319, A320 and A321). Their orange and white planes are a common sight at UK airports.
British Airways (BA) is the UK's flag carrier. It is the second-largest UK airline by fleet size after easyJet, but it is the biggest for long-haul flights from the UK. BA was created in 1974 when the UK government merged BOAC and BEA (the two state-owned airlines at the time). It was sold off to private owners in 1987.
Jet2.com is a UK leisure airline based in Leeds. It is the third largest scheduled UK airline by passenger numbers, behind easyJet and British Airways. Jet2 flies mostly to sunny holiday spots in Spain, the Canaries, Greece, Italy and Turkey. It started in 2003 with one twice-daily route from Leeds Bradford to Amsterdam. Today it runs around 135 planes from 13 UK bases. That is more UK bases than any other airline.
Wizz Air is a Hungarian budget airline. It is the biggest "ultra-low-cost" airline in Central and Eastern Europe. The bright pink and purple planes are a common sight at UK airports, especially London Luton. Wizz was started in 2003 by József Váradi, who is still the CEO today. The fleet is mostly Airbus A321neo planes, with over 250 aircraft as of 2026.
TUI Airways is a British leisure airline based in Luton. It is the fourth-largest UK airline by passenger numbers, after easyJet, British Airways and Jet2.com. TUI mostly flies to holiday destinations: the Mediterranean, Spain, the Canaries, Greece, Turkey, and long-haul to places like the Caribbean, Mexico, Florida and Dominican Republic. The fleet is all Boeing: Boeing 737-800, Boeing 737 MAX 8 and Boeing 787 Dreamliner. TUI was the first UK airline to fly the Boeing 787, back in May 2013.
Virgin Atlantic is a British long-haul airline started by Sir Richard Branson in 1984. The first ever flight was on 22 June 1984, from London Gatwick to Newark in the United States. Today Virgin only flies long-haul routes from the UK to the United States, the Caribbean, India, South Africa, China and the Middle East. They do not fly short routes inside Europe. The fleet is a mix of Airbus A330-300, Airbus A350-1000 and Boeing 787-9 aircraft.
Emirates is the national airline of Dubai and one of the world's biggest airlines. It was started in 1985 with just two aircraft (a Boeing 727 and an Airbus A300) and has grown massively. Today Emirates flies over 250 planes to around 150 destinations in more than 70 countries. Emirates is the world's biggest long-haul airline. It is also the world's biggest operator of the giant Airbus A380 (the double-decker plane) and the Boeing 777 family.
KLM is the national airline of the Netherlands. The full legal name is "Koninklijke Luchtvaart Maatschappij N.V." which means "Royal Aviation Company" in Dutch. KLM is famous for being the oldest airline in the world that still flies under its original name. It was founded on 7 October 1919, more than 100 years ago. The "Royal" title was granted by the Dutch royal family that same year. The head office is at Amsterdamseweg 55 in Amstelveen, just outside Amsterdam.
Lufthansa is the national airline of Germany. The full legal name is Deutsche Lufthansa Aktiengesellschaft (Aktiengesellschaft is German for "stock corporation"). The name comes from "Luft" (air) and "Hansa" (the Hanseatic League of medieval trading cities). The company today was founded in 1953 as "Luftag", acquired the name and logo of the original 1926 Deutsche Luft Hansa in 1954, and made its first commercial flight on 1 April 1955. Lufthansa is over 70 years old, with a heritage going back 100 years.
Aer Lingus is the national airline of the Republic of Ireland. The name comes from the Irish words "aerloingeas", meaning "air fleet". The airline was started in 1936 by the Irish Government, making it one of the oldest airlines still flying today. The head office is at Dublin Airport. The famous symbol is a green shamrock on the tail of every plane. Aer Lingus flies a fleet of Airbus aircraft, mostly the A320 family for short-haul and the A321LR (and soon the new A321XLR) for transatlantic routes.
Qatar Airways is the national airline of the State of Qatar, a small but very wealthy country on the Arabian Peninsula. The airline was founded in 1993, but the modern Qatar Airways really started in 1997 when the new Emir of Qatar took over the country. The airline's hub is Hamad International Airport in Doha, named after the previous Emir. Hamad is one of the busiest hub airports in the Middle East and one of the largest in the world. The airline flies to around 180 cities in 86 countries.
